What NLIS software actually needs to do
The National Livestock Identification System is Australia's regulated, RFID-based traceability database for cattle, sheep, and goats. Every commercial livestock producer in Australia interacts with it. Most NLIS work isn't lodging a single transfer — that's what the free NLIS portal at nlis.com.au is for. The work that takes hours every month is:
- Monthly Device Query reconciliation — downloading your NLIS Device Query report and matching every RFID against your farm records.
- Lost-tag reporting — every time a tag is replaced in the yard, NLIS needs to know.
- Transfer-in / transfer-out lodgement — when animals arrive or leave the property.
- EU-status and LT-status tracking — keeping track of which animals are still eligible for EU export and lifetime traceable status.

The free NLIS portal handles individual lodgements one at a time. NLIS software should handle the bulk reconciliation workflow above — automatically, with audit trail, and ideally without you noticing.

1. Direct sync with the NLIS production database New
Tagline now talks directly to the production NLIS database at nlis.com.au. No more downloading a Device Query CSV every month and uploading it to your software. Trigger a sync (or schedule it) and the current state of every device on your PIC lands in Tagline — EU status, LT status, transfer history, the lot. Lodgements you create in Tagline — transfers, lost tags, mob movements — go straight back through the same connection.
The four manual importers — Device Query, Snapshot, Moved-on, Moved-off, Slaughter Report — are still there as a check-against and as a fallback for first-runs or properties without their NLIS credentials plumbed in. The Reconciliation Sheet then classifies every RFID across both data sources:
- IN_BOTH — animal exists in both farm records and NLIS, matching. No action needed.
- FARM_ONLY — animal in farm records but NLIS hasn't received the transfer-in. Flag for lodgement.
- NLIS_ONLY — RFID at your PIC per NLIS, but no farm record. Investigate or enrich.
- MISMATCH — both sides exist but origin PIC or transfer date differ. Resolve.
Since-last-review snapshot shows NEW / CHANGED / RESOLVED badges so you only look at what's changed since your last reconciliation pass.
2. Yard Mode + auto-queued lost-tag reports
When you replace a lost NLIS tag in the yard — using a tablet, the phone camera, or an RFID stick reader — Tagline marks the old tag as LOST and automatically queues a lost-tag report for submission to NLIS. The compliance step never gets forgotten. If both tags are missing on an animal, the mob-scan elimination workflow pairs the new RFID to the missing animal via what's expected vs what was scanned.
3. Direct eNVD integration (GraphQL)
Tagline's eNVD integration generates valid LPAC1 + HSC3 consignments via the Integrity Systems GraphQL API. No re-keying, no PDFs to upload. Section 2.4 of the developer specification is unit-tested. When you ship animals, the consignment is created from the data Tagline already has.
4. LPA QA pack — 10/10 reports built in
Every report an LPA auditor asks for is exportable as a CSV: Bred Animals (L2), Animal Purchases (L3a), Animal Sales (L3b), Animal Treatments (L7), Animal Feeding (L8c), Feed Purchases (L8a), Paddock Withholding, Paddock Animal History, Chemical Authorisation, Animal Withholding. Filter by date range, hit Export. The afternoon-before-the-audit panic doesn't happen.
5. White-glove cleanup service — included
Most farms come to us with NLIS records that haven't been reconciled in years — transferred-in animals with no proper state, mistakes from paper notebooks, lost tags that were never lodged. Tagline works with any NLIS-conformant RFID reader (Allflex, Datamars, Doowa, etc.) via HID keyboard mode — no driver installs, no vendor lock-in. Use the stick reader you already own, or scan barcodes with your phone camera. We don't sell hardware; we sell the software that makes your hardware useful.
