Export Slaughter Interval (ESI) for cattle — what it is, how to find it, how to track it
Australia exports about 70% of the beef it produces. The Export Slaughter Interval is the residue rule that keeps that market access — the gap between treating an animal and slaughtering it that the importing country needs to see. Get it wrong and the consignment doesn't fail at the abattoir; it fails at the testing lab in Korea or Brussels, and Australia loses access for everyone.
What an ESI is
The Export Slaughter Interval (ESI) — defined by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) — is the minimum time that should elapse between the last veterinary chemical treatment of an animal and the slaughter of that animal for export. It's expressed in days and applies per active constituent, not per brand. The ESI is published on the product label of registered veterinary chemicals; the canonical reference is the APVMA's PubCRIS database.
Why ESI exists separately from WHP
The withholding period and the ESI look superficially identical — both are "days from last treatment to slaughter" — but they answer different regulatory questions:

The ESI exists because the rest of the world doesn't all set MRLs the same way Australia does. The EU might allow 0.1 mg/kg of a particular active in fat; Codex might say zero detectable; the US might be silent on it. APVMA's job is to set an ESI long enough that, after the longer wait, the residue in the carcass falls below whichever trading partner's bar is the lowest. So WHP clearing doesn't imply ESI clearing — many products have an ESI several times longer than the WHP.
How to find the ESI for a product
- Read the label. The ESI is a label statement on every registered veterinary chemical — usually right under the WHP, prefixed "Export Slaughter Interval (ESI):". If the label says "Nil" the product has no ESI longer than the WHP for that active.
- If the label is missing, faded or in doubt — use PubCRIS. The APVMA's public registry (PubCRIS, searchable from the APVMA website) returns the current label for every registered product by trade name or active constituent. Always trust PubCRIS over a printed label that may pre-date a label change.
- If no ESI is stated. Older products and some niche products may have no ESI on the label. The APVMA's own guidance is to treat that as "ESI advice required" — contact APVMA or the manufacturer before treating animals destined for export. Assuming "no ESI = no wait" is the wrong call.
- For combination products. A product with multiple actives takes the LONGEST ESI of any active, not the average. A pour-on with ivermectin + a synthetic pyrethroid sits at whichever active has the longer ESI.
- Off-label and minor-use permits. Off-label use by a vet under a minor-use permit can have a permit-specific ESI that overrides the on-label one. Keep the permit number with the treatment record.
Products and classes where ESI commonly bites
- Hormonal Growth Promotants (HGPs). HGP-treated cattle have a specific ESI on the implant label and on the EU Cattle Accreditation Scheme (EUCAS) — EU markets won't take HGP-treated stock at all.
- Macrocyclic lactones (ivermectin, abamectin, moxidectin, doramectin, eprinomectin). Common drenches and pour-ons; the ESI is often longer than the WHP.
- Synthetic pyrethroids and organophosphates in lice / tick / buffalo-fly products.
- Long-acting injectable antibiotics. The ESI can run weeks past the WHP.
- Cydectin Long Acting and similar moxidectin LA products. The ESI is famously long.
- Anthelmintics combined with flukicides. The flukicide active often dictates the ESI.
The pattern: anything fat-soluble, anything long-acting and anything where the trading partner's MRL is tight pushes the ESI well past the WHP.
Where the ESI lands on the NVD
The producer's NVD signature is a legal declaration that every beast in the consignment has cleared both its WHP and its ESI for every veterinary chemical received. An animal can be inside its ESI but outside its WHP. That animal is legally saleable to the domestic market but cannot be declared on an eNVD for an export-eligible chain. The processor decides the consequence — usually re-routing to a domestic chain, sometimes refusing the consignment outright.
What a breach looks like in practice
Most ESI breaches aren't detected at slaughter. They're detected weeks later, in the importing country's residue-monitoring lab, when a sample from your batch tests above the destination MRL. The cost lands at three levels:
- The consignment. Often condemned or downgraded, with the loss falling on the chain.
- The producer. Traceback via NLIS finds the source — your PIC. LPA accreditation can be reviewed; the property may be flagged for routine residue surveillance for a period.
- The industry. Persistent breaches against a specific market can lead to that market tightening import requirements for all Australian beef — the harm extends well past the PIC that caused it.
Tracking ESI properly
The mechanics are the same as the WHP tracking workflow, with one extra column. For every treatment, record:
- Product trade name and active constituent.
- Treatment date.
- WHP from the label.
- ESI from the label (or "Nil" if equal to WHP).
- The two derived dates: earliest domestic sale (treatment date + WHP) and earliest export slaughter (treatment date + ESI).
Then run the rule at sale time: an animal can be drafted into an export consignment only if the dispatch date is on or after every ESI date stamped against it across its treatment history. One miss across one beast can taint the whole eNVD.
Where Tagline fits
Tagline stores the WHP and ESI against every chemical in the chemical inventory (pulled from the label by the Lens) so they're inherited automatically by every treatment. Each animal carries a rolling "earliest sale" and "earliest export" date. The eNVD builder refuses to add an animal to an export consignment if the dispatch date is inside any of its ESI windows — the declaration won't let you sign something that isn't true.
The ESI is the rest of the world's MRL, expressed in days you have to wait. Get it right and Australia keeps its export markets. Get it wrong and the consequence lands on the next producer too.
